Our Last Day In Reception 

To end out time in Reception, we had a water balloon fight, the children took aim and attempted to throw a balloon at Mr Warran. We then had even more fun throwing them at each other!

Silly Day

July 2023

To celebrate our fantastic year, we decided to have a ‘Silly Party’. It was lots of fun and we had a wonderful day!
The children were invited to come into school in their silliest outfits, we had children with clothes inside out, backwards, odd shoes and socks, mismatched clothing and rainbow outfits.

We all had our faces painted too! We started off by playing pass the parcel.

We then had a go at dunking our hands into a bucket of baked beans and searching for a prize, every single child was brave enough to take part!

We had a yummy silly packed lunch and ate silly sweetie pizza and had decorated our own biscuits. We finished our day with party games and taking part in the school talent show.

Getting Ready For Year 1!

June 2023

In preparation for moving to year 1, the children practiced getting their own lunch tray and food. They carefully held the tray and sat down to enjoy. 

We will do this everyday until the end of term. 

Our Relaxation Time

June 2023

Another way we thought we could keep our bodies healthy was by exercising. We did a 10 minute workout and then decided to have a peaceful relaxation to help our bodies to cool down and regain our energy. 

We all laid down and put a cool cloth onto our heads and listened to peaceful music to calm our bodies and minds. 

Healthy, Body and Mind Week 

June 2023

The children have been looking at how we can keep our bodies healthy and the types of food we should be eating. 

We decided to make a healthy cheese salad wrap. The children designed their wrap and what they wanted to put onto it. 

We made them in small groups and enjoyed eating the wraps outdoors in the sunshine. 

Our School Grounds

We went on a walk around the school grounds, the children had to look for things that they found interesting and take a photo using the ipads.

We saw lots of different parts of our natural world including an apple and pear tree, we saw flowers and a snail climbing a tree. 

Caterpillars

May 2023

We have been looking at the story of 'Christopher's Caterpillars' in our literacy sessions. 

Because of this, we have our very own caterpillars in the classroom. Over the last 2 weeks, we have enjoyed watching them munch lots of food and grow even bigger. 

The caterpillars are now beginning to make their cocoons and begin the process of turning into butterflies. It is a very exciting time for us to watch. 

Our Eid Celebrations

This year in Reception, the children really enjoyed learning about Eid and how people around the world celebrate the special time. 

The children enjoyed tasting some traditional food like samosas and sweet treats. We created mehndi patterns onto hands using glue and glitter, the children especially enjoyed using the piping bags to do this. 

We had a wonderful day together during our school celebrations. 

Our World

Our new theme this term is 'Our World'

We will be looking at a range of texts in literacy including 'A Gift for Amma', 'Christopher's Caterpillars' and 'Giraffes Can't Dance'

We will compare life in England to life in other countries and how people live, we will look at animals and their environments. 

Also this term we will have our very own caterpillars in class, we will watch them grow and build their own cocoons. The children will learn about the butterfly life cycle and the various stages. 

Our Fairytale Ball

March 2023

To end our 'Once Upon a Time' theme, we looked at the story of 'Cinderella'

We held our very own Fairytale ball, we came to school in our best fairytale outfits and party clothes. 

We danced the waltz just like Cinderella and the Prince. 

The children enjoyed a special tea party, they made their own special kam sandwiches for the party. They also ate some yummy treats like cake and biscuits. 

It was a wonderful day!

Tasting Goldilocks' Porridge

The children were very excited to taste the porridge that Goldilocks managed to steal from the three bears. 

The children added a little honey and thought it tasted delicious!

We began to look at the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’

The children were very shocked to walk into a crime scene when they came to school!

We tried our best to look for clues and find out who was behind this.

We discovered it was the sneaky Goldilocks. We found camera footage of her stealing porridge.

Our Visit to the North City Library

March 2023

Reception visited 'North City Library' for a visit. 

We took the Number 53 bus just outside of school, it was very exciting to see our local area on the walk and to get on a bus with our friends and teachers. 

When we arrived, we had a tour of the library and were able to each choose a book to bring back to school and share. 

We listened to a story and sang some songs. 

We came back to school and enjoyed a yummy picnic in our classroom. It was a brilliant morning!

'The Princess and The Pea'

March 2023

As part of our ‘Once Upon a Time’ theme this half term, we looked at the story of the ‘Princess and the Pea’ by Rachel Isadora.

We each planted our own pea pod plant. We took care to carefully plant it and help it to grow.

We explored different textures. We used mushy peas, peas and pea seeds to do this. The children sorted the peas and enjoyed getting their hands stuck in the the slimy mess. 

Our theme this half term is 'Once Upon a Time...' 

In this time we will explore and learn about various fairytales. 

We will look at the characters and the many adventures that they go on and how they overcome troubles. 

Staying Safe Week

February 2023

In Reception, we have been looking at many different ways we can keep ourselves safe during ‘Staying Safe Week’

The first thing we did was to learn how to cross the road safely. We learnt the very important rules of ‘STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! THINK!’ 

We practiced on pretend roads inside the classroom and then we were ready for a real road. We left the school gates and went to practice on St Augustine’s Street.

In pairs, we crossed the road safely with an adult, practicing our ‘STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! THINK!’ the whole time.

We also looked at how we can be safe when using the internet.

We read the story of ‘Digiduck and the Magic Castle’

The children learnt about how they can be safe when using the Internet and if they were ever unsure of anything, that they should ask a grown up. We read about Digiduck and his friends and what they get up to when downloading apps and in app purchases.

Also during the week, as a class we looked at things in our homes that could be dangerous if we touch, swallow or play with them. We went through each item and sorted them into baskets with things we are allowed to touch and things that grown-ups should use.

We discussed what things are used for and talked about items that we should always use with a grown up like mouthwash and things we should never go near like bleach.

We sorted laundry tabs, bleach, hand soap, scissors, juice, shampoo, mouthwash and lots of other items.

We used the ‘Staying Safe with Sam’ book to do this, Sam and his sister are curious about things in their home. They learn to always ask a grownup if they are unsure about something and whether it is safe to touch.

The children enjoyed learning about people that help us in our community.

We looked at the roles of teacher, police officers, fire fighters, postal workers, vets, dentists, doctors, lollypop ladies and men, nurses and lifeguards.

The children found it lots of fun to dress up in the special uniforms that they wear.

The children had lots of fun using the dental kit we have in our classroom, they checked each other mouths and made sure to check that their patients brush their teeth.

We looked at basic first aid with the children, what they should do if they needed help and the special telephone number that they should use in an emergency.

It was lots of fun practicing how to put a plaster on our friends.

Article 24-You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well.

Article 27- You have the right to food, clothing, and a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met. You should not have to be disadvantaged so that you can’t do as many of the things other kids do.

Phonics and Reading Family Workshop

January 2023

On January 26th, Reception and Year 1 took part in a ‘Phonics and Reading’ family workshop.
Parents were invited to find out how we teach Phonics and early reading to children in Reception and Year 1. There were lots of fun activities that parents and carers were invited to play with their child. 

Article 29- Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities. It should also help you learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people.

Making Gruffalo Crumble

January 2023

In literacy we have been looking at the story 'The Gruffalos Child'
The children made their own Gruffalo Crumble.
We used flour, sugar, apples, cinnamon, butter and blueberries for the Gruffalo spikes.

The Children enjoyed adding all of the ingredients into a bowl and mixing it up, an adult baked the crumbles in the oven.

They took their crumbles home to enjoy with their families. 

Washing Our Hands

January 2023

In class this week, we have been looking at the importance of hand washing. We have completed an experiment with bread, we all touched it with unwashed hands and are waiting to see what happens and how much mould will grow on the dirty bread.
Today we added some pepper to water acting as bacteria. We dipped fingers into the water with soap on the tip.
We watched the fake bacteria disappear when the soap was near.

Article 17- You have the right to get information that is important to your well-being, from radio, newspaper, books, computers and other sources. Adults should make sure that the information you are getting is not harmful, and help you find and understand the information you need. 

Keeping Healthy 

This term, our theme is ‘Keeping Healthy’. Children will have lots of opportunities to explore

different ways in which they can keep healthy and safe, for example, we will learn about the importance of washing our hands, brushing our teeth, getting enough sleep and healthy eating and exercise.

We have lots of fun activities and special guest visitors planned too!

Christmas!

December 2022

The children have had brilliant time celebrating Christmas in school. We have been looking at the Nativity story and why we celebrate Christmas. 

We each hung our bauble on the school tree, we made some Christmas crafts and had a special party with a visitor. We also worked really hard preparing and performing our songs on the stage for all of the adults.

Friendship Week

November 2022

We took part in Odd Socks Day, the aim was to celebrate that we are all different and all equal. 

We focused on P.S.H.E everyday and what it takes to be a good friend. 

We created a compliment train and made our own friendship web.

Olivia said "Megan is my best friend because she plays on the climbing frame with me and we always play with each other"

Hassan said "Freddie is my friend because he shares with me"

Odd Socks Day

Reception took part in the national 'Odd Socks Day'

We are celebrating that we are all different and all equal.

Making Bread In Reception

November 2022

In Reception, we have been looking at the story of 'The Little Red Hen'
In the story, she works hard to make the bread and none of the other animals want to help her.
We gathered the ingredients and made our own bread, we worked together to add each one and mix it all up.
When it was ready, we enjoyed eating and tasting our delicious bread. 

Olivia said “I poured some honey, I put in some flour and then we played with it and we rolled it to make a sausage and then we can eat it”

Ahad said “We was making bread, we put in water. We put salt in and then we put honey in and then oil. We rolled it in the balls, when its cooked we’re gonna eat it”

Mariama said “We were making bread, we had flour and oil and baking powder. We’re going to put it in the oven, it’s going to be hard”

Frederick said “We made bread, we had flour, baking powder, salt, water and honey. We maked it into a ball, Miss is going to put it in the oven and its going to turn really big”

Noah said “We used wheat, it turned into flour. We put in honey and water inside and then rolled it”

Celebrating Autumn

Our Theme for this half term is Celebrating Autumn, we will look at seasonal changes and which animals and plants we see this time of year.

We will also be looking at festivals like 'Diwali' and 'Christmas' and how people celebrate around the world.

Diwali 2022

October 2022

We have been celebrating Diwali in Reception the past few weeks, we have looked at the story of Rama and Sita. The children enjoyed acting it out using masks and props. 

We have also learnt about 'Lakshmi' and how she is often welcomed into homes that are full of light. We then made our own Diya lamps to decorate our classroom. We made them using salt dough and then painted them when they were ready. 

We made our own Rangoli patterns using beads, gems and jewels.

We had a brilliant party celebrating Diwali, we tried some traditional food and dancing.

Ourselves!

This half term, our theme is ‘Ourselves’. Children will have lots of opportunities to learn about themselves, their families and friends. This will help us as we learn to celebrate the qualities that make us unique and special, as well as celebrating each other’s achievements.
