Sports Funding

The Government has again given all schools additional funding so that they can develop PE  (Physical Education) in their schools.

At St Augustine’s, we are spending the additional funding to ensure all staff are well trained in order to deliver quality first PE to all children in our school.

We are spending some of the funding to ensure that all children are able to take part in active play when they are outdoors and as such we have invested heavily in an outdoor gym and developing the playground

Children in Key Stage 1 are developing their fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident.  They are being taught to master basic movements in running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and are being taught to apply these in a range of activities.  They are being taught to participate in team games and are developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.  In dance, they are performing dances using simple movement patterns.

Children in Key Stage 2 are continuing to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They are developing an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learning how to evaluate and recognise their own successes.  Children are being taught to develop their skills in running, jumping, throwing and catching as well as playing competitive games such as badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis.  They are developing flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance  and performing dances using a range of movement patterns.

All children in Year 4 are taught Swimming and water safety.

We endeavour that by the end of their primary school career, all of our children can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

71% of our current Year 6 pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m.

5% of our current Year 6 pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 50m

96% of our current Year 5 pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m.

50% of our current Year 5 pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 50m

As a result of effective Sports Funding spending, our children are more active than ever before.  Staff are better trained to teach the children and the children are more engaged in their learning.

PE and the understanding of a healthy body and mind is promoted throughout school.  Children enjoy learning about healthy choices and are taught to cook healthy meals and lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

We work closely with external agencies such as Healthy Schools, Active Lifestyles and School Health to teach our children and their families the importance of healthy living.
