St Augustine's CofE Primary School

Believe, Achieve, Succeed

Our Vision

French Language Courses at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (SIAL) | Sorbonne Université

“Every language is like an open window that shows a new view of the world and expands your attitude towards life”.

Intent: At St Augustine's, pupils receive French lessons from year three onwards. Over the course of their time in KS2, pupils will learn the vocabulary and skills needed to have simple conversations in French about various topics. Some of the main benefits of learning an additional language are that it encourages children to speak and interact with each other, enhances self-confidence and promotes curiosity about other cultures. In addition, the understanding of grammar that pupils gain from learning French also helps them in their English lessons.

Implementation: Pupils should be taught French on a weekly basis by their class teacher. Pupils follow a curriculum which has been carefully designed to build on what pupils have already learned in order to develop their knowledge and confidence with French over their primary school career. Lessons include a mixture of listening, speaking and writing and are intended to be interactive and enjoyable for pupils. Activities also include information about French culture and the culture of French speaking countries.

Impact: Our aim is that, by year six, pupils will be confident to have basic conversations, read simple texts and write sentences in French. Children will gain an understanding of other cultures and languages and will gain a greater understanding of how language works, which will support them in their English work.

Bienvenue Dans Notre Club Francais

Welcome to our French Club

Bonjour Mes Amis

This Autumn half term we commenced French Club at St Augustine's for years 3 and 4!

The club is a great opportunity for the children to brush up on their French communication skills and explore fantastic French culture.

French Food Tasting!

This week the children were very excited to taste some well known French treats in the staffroom! There was Pain au chocolate, croissant, crepes and chocolat chaud. But there was a catch they had to ask for the food they wanted to eat in French...

For example: 'Madame Akhtar Je voudrais une croissant si'l vous plait.'

The children did exceptionally well, so much so that there was nothing left by the end of the lesson!

What's been going on in M.F.L. across school this term?
