Today we all raised money and awareness for Socceraid and Unicef. We came into school in our football kits and sporty clothes and took part in a football obstacle course that Mr Warren made for us. The money we raised went towards building playgrounds and schools for children in less-fortunate circumstances. It was a super fun day and we all had a great time!

Today Year 2 went on their trip to Manchester Airport. Even though the weather was not the best, everyone had a fantastic time. We had a picnic outside whilst watching the planes take off and land.

The children got to go inside a plane and be pilots and pretend to take off and land the plane. Everyone got the chance to dress up as cabin crew, pilots, police officers or fighter fighters.

We found out about the different aircraft that land at the airport and we even got to go and see concord, which was the fastest plane, but sadly no longer flies.

In science we have been looking at life cycles.

Year two were fortunate enough to have some chicks earlier this month, and now we have started to look at the life cycle of frogs.

We have now got some tadpoles and hopefully we will be able to see how they turn into little frogs.

Thursday 17th March

Year 2 were given the chance to start some African  Drumming lessons.

The children really enjoyed it.

Article 31. Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of activities.

As we have had chicks in class, we decided to make some little stuffed chicks in D.T.

First we designed them, then used some felt to make the bodies.

The children had to stitch the body together before filling it with stuffing.

We were all pleased with how well the chicks came out!

Meet The Chicks!

Today we had a photo shoot with the chicks.

We even got them out to meet the children in year 2.

During our Staying Safe Week, we looked at people who help us stay safe. The children said that Police Officers are people who can help us stay safe. Lots of the year two children said that they would like to be police officers when they are older. We arranged for a police officer to come in and talk to the children about his job, and what they needed to do to become an officer when they are older.

He let all the children try on parts of his uniform. Some children even got to use the handcuffs and pretend to be an officer. They had a really lovely afternoon and asked lots of interesting questions!

Article 17: Every child has a right to reliable information from a variety of sources.

Friday 11th March

We have had another arrival overnight. Chick 2 has hatched and is now going to join chick no 1. We have not given them any names yet, but hopefully year 2 will come up with some names today. Maybe we will have even more chicks by the end of today!

Update!

By the end of the day 2 more beautiful chicks have hatched. The year 2 children came up with some names and put them into a bag. We drew 4 out for the chicks that have hatched.

They are:

Fluffy, Crystal, Precious and Rosie.

On Monday 14th March we had one more chick hatch.

We have named him Charlie.

Thursday 10th March

Egg-citing News!

World Book Day 2022: Thursday 3rd March

Today it is the 25th World Book Day and children all over the world will be celebrating.

This years theme is

'You are a reader.'

At St Augustine's the children and staff have been arriving to school dressed as some of their favourite book

characters or in their pyjamas.

We all got a chance to show off our costumes in assembly where we had a parade.

In year 2 we have had some amazing Characters.

The children have had a fun packed day writing their own books, making book marks and puppets.

During the day we have had  'Stop everything and read' sessions, where the children stop what they are doing

and read for ten minutes.

They have been able to share some of their favourite stories with each other.

In history year 2 have been learning about Amy Johnson, the first female pilot to fly solo to Australia.

They have really enjoyed this work, so to finish off we decided to do some art work to link to her journey.

The children had to decide on some of the views Amy would see on her flight to Australia.

Each child made a polystyrene printing block with their chosen view.

We used black ink to make the pictures look like old photos.

I am sure you will agree the end product looks fantastic!

Staying Safe Week

This week is staying safe week in school. In Year 2 will the children will be be doing a range of lessons and activities around keeping themselves safe.

The children will be looking at E-Safety, Safety at Home, Road Safety and Basic First Aid.

Article 17: Every child has the right to reliable information from a variety of sources.

On Monday we had a lesson around things that are good or bad for our bodies.

The children looked at things around the home that could be either good for our bodies, bad for our bodies or good for just some people.

Safer Internet Day - UK Safer Internet Centre

Tuesday 8th February was Safer Internet Day.

All the children in school have been doing work around being safe online.

In year 2 we have been looking at how to use the internet safely at school and at home.

The children have made some fantastic posters to show everyone how to be safe but still have fun when using the internet.

On Wednesday, Miss Cox and the Digital Leaders came to work in Year 2 to help them to produce their E-Safety Charter.

This is the charter that they came up with!

On Thursday year 2 did some work around the NSPCC PANTS.

This week is Friendship Week in school. The theme this year is
'One Kind World'
The week is about hope and the positive and kind things we can all do to stop hurtful behaviour.
We will be doing lots of different activities throughout the week.

Tuesday 16th November

Today year 2 took part in a workshop called a 'Play in a Day'.

The play in a day was all about being safe online.

The children got to work with Emily from a theatre company who helped them learn the play in just one day and perform it to the rest of the school.

Article 24: Children have a right to a safe environment to live in. All adults and children should have information about how to stay safe.

Year 2 did a fantastic play with a great message about being safe on the internet.

Article 31. Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of activities.

Wednesday 17th November

Today we thought about what makes a good friend.

Thursday 18th November

We did a great activity today, where we created a friendship thread. Each child had a turn at holding a piece of the thread and saying something nice to another child in class. The thread was then passed to that child. We continued until all the children were holding a part of the threat. When we had finished it looked like we had created a web.

Friday 19th November

To end our Friendship week activities we all made some rainbow clouds. We put our name into the cloud and attached coloured strips. Our friends had to write kind words to describe us. They all looked beautiful and unique.

Today was also

This year for Black History Month year 2 have been looking at Dame Floella Benjamin.

Floella Benjamin receives damehood at Buckingham Palace - BBC News

Floella is a well known actress, writer, singer and politician.

We looked at one of the books she wrote about her journey to England when she was just 10 years old.

Year two were shocked to discover that Floella travelled on a ship with her 2 brothers and sister for 15 days without an adult accompanying them. We thought about how she must have been feeling during the journey and how it was when she arrived in England.

Unfortunately, when Floella and her siblings arrived it England they were treated differently because of the colour of their skin.

As a child Floella dreamed of meeting the Queen and because of her hard work and perseverance she got made a Dame by the Queen in 2020 and met her at Buckingham Palace!

Article 2 (non-discrimination) The Convention applies to every child without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language, abilities or any other status, whatever they think or say, whatever their family background.

We did some role play on how Floella was feeling on the boat and how she felt when she arrived in England and got to see her mother waiting for her and her siblings. We presented what we found out in assembly on Friday and found out what other classes had been learning.

If you would like to hear the story we read click on the link below:
