St Augustine's CofE Primary School

Believe, Achieve, Succeed

Our Vision (Intent)

In our positive learning environment, we aim to provide learning opportunities for every child to engage fully within the history curriculum. Our aim to provide children with skills and knowledge, which will aim to promote children’s curiosity to understanding more about the past, develop their critical thinking, perspective and judgement, and understand the impact that history has had on modern life.

We follow the National curriculum for History and have mapped out the key learning for each Year group, with a clear focus on specific knowledge that each child needs to leave with at the end of their primary journey. We teach History as it is essential to the past, present and future and without it we would not know much about our ancestors and how to deal with current problems. As History is all around us, it helps us to understand change and societal developments. This provides children with the context to understand themselves and the challenges faced to appreciate the world we live in today. History allows children to engage with a broad and balanced curriculum and through this, children will learn a range of skills, concepts, attitudes and methods of working.

Alongside the National Curriculum, we teach pupils about significant people and groups from history during themed weeks such as Black History Month and LGBT+ History Month

What does this look like in our school? (Implementation)

History is taught for 3 half-terms a year, alternating with Geography.

Each unit starts with giving children key facts and terminology about the unit in a Knowledge Organiser. This knowledge is then built on through high-quality teaching, following the St Augustine's curriculum map below.

At the end of the unit, the children complete a low-stakes quiz to check their learning.

Learning across other subjects in the curriculum is linked to the History to give children additional exposure to concepts. History-based trips take place every year across the school to give pupils hand-on, real-life experiences to link their learning to.
